Check it out! The link is below:

http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200903/poem-moles

If you find the ending hard to believe, I have to say I sincerely don't doubt it. By the extensive damage moles can create in a yard, or a cemetery for all intensive purposes, there's this incorrect assumption which makes them seem so much larger than life...until you see a very tiny one, a cat leaves as a present on the back stoop, and mistake it for a mouse.

The poem made me think of the camp songs we used to sing to gross ourselves out - the ones about the worms crawling in and out. Though, I can't recall anyone ever saying anything about moles!Cemetery Road 101http://www.blogger.com/profile/14168541205162575967noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2491583881417428950.post-7725612710260134132009-02-27T17:21:00.003-05:002009-02-27T17:39:41.622-05:00Epitaph for a WriterThis week, among other things, I've decided what I want written on my epitaph.

"Perfect submission, all is at rest."

Blessed assurance has been one of my favorite hymns since I was a little girl, singing it loudly and proudly (not to mention off-key and uncaring). In a bunch of drafts and scribble scratch it has taken on particular new and special meaning to me. This line is often my reminder to keep digging in the trenches and putting my behind in the chair. For a writer, the search for perfection is continuous. We're always striving to capture feelings, brilliance, elegance, and delight through stringing together the perfect choice of words. Yet, what really is this illusive perfection? I think it's different for every one of us, but we always recognize it when it's a small moment meant only for us. Strange, how that sometimes happens...a line begins, in a most unusual sort of way and then it goes in its own direction. Granted, a somewhat odd take on things, but a different perspective...it did make me pause for a few moments at the unique similarities and at how various aspects of pop culture tend to "pop" into my mind at the most unusual times.

Interment

Traffic to the site,
closely monitored by
clicked on headlights.

In an instant,
policeman messaging forward,
eyes google out of windows.

All the while, struggling to reconfigure-
defragment this hard drive.
Error. Or wish it would just keel right on over? And get the heck out of your life? I mean, bury it already!

A while back, I think after a season premiere of Grey's Anatomy and watching Meredith try to drown herself in the bathtub (and wanting to tell her that an oven would've been MUCH more effective) I contemplated the whole death aspect of our pop culture, and though how it's filled with sorrow and grief, and so on, there is still such a high level of entertainment associated around death.

Now, don't misunderstand me. I really don't want a whole lot of hateful comments from Meredith or Plath fans about how I'm being insensitive, but have you ever at least considered the possibility that in pop culture there is indeed a certain entertainment value toward death? We have this fascination toward the grotesque on so many multiple levels.

Having lived beside a cemetery for a number of years, I see this quite keenly every day. Sometimes I think it has to be funny too or else it would be unbearable. Especially since there are probably a thousand families out there who I'd like to say, "If you're going to spend so much money on the artificial flowers on your loved ones graves, you should take care of them because I HATE having to pick them up out of my own front yard every time the wind blows really hard!"

Has anyone else ever done that? I get anonymous special deliveries all the time and it's always the most awkward feeling. First, I think I should thank someone. Silk red roses certainly are beautiful, though I generally do prefer fresh. Second, there's part of me that feels I should insist, "Oh, I'm so very very sorry...there's just no way I could possibly accept these, they're simply too much." Third, there's a part of me that truly feels sorry for the person whose flower saddle or vase is now empty because the arrangement wasn't properly secured. And last, but certainly not least, since I lost my own grandmother near the end of last year, the arrival of each and every new bouquet has her speaking to me with her Depression era words of wisdom, "Those are just too pretty now, for you to let them sit there and rot. You know better than to let those go to waste!"

I do hope my grandma understands that I don't for the life of me know what to do with cemetery flowers...they're not exactly like old cel phones that you can just drop off somewhere and donate to a good cause. And I'll admit it...there are a few older looking graves that I occasionally feel sorry for and venture out stealthily to play a fun quick game of "pin the flowers on the tombstomb" when I think none of my neighbors are looking.

Even right now there's this rather large white styrofoam cross sitting beside my front porch stoop that I haven't a clue what to do with. It's beautiful really. One of the nicer more expensive arrangements and I would think someone is pretty sad that it just blew into my front yard. It's just sitting there. I can't bring myself to do anything with it just yet. Each time I go out to run an errand I think, that would certainly be beautiful for Valentine's Day and someone's probably really going to miss it. And as I come back from my errand, it's as if this still small whisper is saying, "Take up the cross."

It's a bit unnerving...and what exactly am I supposed to do with it?

Grandma never left me any sage advice about what to do with these sort of things...but, she did insist that I should keep writing. Maybe that's the greatest thing about really loving to write. It never dies and it never will be something you can just bury.

That said, if you still need to borrow a shovel and throw some dirt on an idea, by all means feel free to go right ahead and do so. It might make you feel better. If it doesn't, then give me a shout. I can give you an exceptional discount on silk floral arrangements.Cemetery Road 101http://www.blogger.com/profile/14168541205162575967noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2491583881417428950.post-28850558288196966482009-01-14T00:42:00.002-05:002009-01-14T01:07:25.053-05:00Writing Goals for 2009The start of a new year always brings with it this irritating feeling of inadequacy. Last year's to-do list is still lingering around with its leftovers that I try to keep longer than cold spaghetti covered in saran wrap in the way back of the refrigerator. There's just something about cold spaghetti that seems, simply unappetizing.

Who really wants to eat it? Or go through the trouble of heating it up in the microwave? All the hassle for some limp noodles?

Ever get that feeling about what you're writing?

I know I do. Especially since I have it programmed in my brain that pasta is nothing but cheap carbohydrates and it's so much quicker and easier to go get another box and heat up a fresh pot!

Writing is often the same way as it's so much easier to toss aside an unpolished clump of junk and go pick up someone else's shiny new book which either reminds me of Garden Rotini in assorted flavors or homemade Fettucini Alfredo.

So, one of my writing goals for 2009 is to stop being such a cold, limp noodle. To really find out what's hiding in the way back of my refrigerator. To not be scared to throw out some green looking, funky smelling leftovers, and discover some compost material or just plain trash.

As a writer, if you've got something hiding in your refrigerator than I'd like to challenge you to pick up that leftover spaghetti - that half finished novel you set aside 'round about June last summer, that idea that's been simmering on the stove, that tiny piece of macaroni that's been camping out between the eggs and the butter, or that notion you shoved into the crisper that's slowly turning brown around the edges like a forgotten head of lettuce.

Let's start using those noodles!

I promise to do the same...soon as I really do clean out my refrigerator because right now I'm sure I've got a few noodles that have dehydrated into nothingness and become jelly super glued onto the bottom of something.Cemetery Road 101http://www.blogger.com/profile/14168541205162575967noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2491583881417428950.post-28346920362507675552009-01-12T15:13:00.003-05:002009-01-12T15:19:34.225-05:00Virginia Festival of the BookNeed a reason to come visit Virginia?
Here's a great one -

March 18-22, 2009 will be the 15th Annual Virginia Festival of the Book!

Five, yes FIVE days of mostly free literary events that are open to the public, with the intent to honor book culture and promote reading and literacy.

Wow! I thought I was just in time to make one last batch of homemade spaghetti sauce until I realized I didn't have any tomato paste in the cupboard. With two little ones to bathe, read a stack of books too, and tuck in good-night, I decided venturing out to the grocery store would have to wait until tomorrow. So, I left the bright red 5-gallon bucket of tomatoes carefully placed beside the refrigerator in the kitchen.

This morning I really struggled to get motivated. I knew the tomatoes were waiting in the red bucket in the kitchen and I kept telling myself I'd get to them soon...

Soon as the 3-year-old quit throwing legos at his brother. Soon as I mopped up the spilled milk that the little one was eagerly "fingerpainting" with on the kitchen table. Soon as I found out what happened to the little one's missing sock. Soon as I made sure a lego or the missing sock hadn't inadvertently been flushed down the toilet...

As I retrieved the plunger from the toilet and a gleefully squealing toddler escaped past me, I figured I would get to the spaghetti sauce soon...very soon. Ok. The toilet emergency was a false alarm and I was just about ready to put the kids in the car and venture out into public when....

Soon, I heard two peels of laughter and one rambunctious 3-year-old shouting, "Mommy, me are having fun! Me are having fun! Me are playing ball!"

Yep. You probably guessed what the boys were playing ball with.

Here's a funny question for ya...how many tomatoes can two little boys throw across the kitchen and living room in say, all about ten seconds?

5? Nah. Way too few!

10? You're so cold there's icebergs on your toes!

20? Getting warmer.

Last count in rounding them all up? I think it was around 32!

Yeah, I know what you're thinking. How can two little boys do that so quickly? Here's another perspective. Do you know how mad you can get as you round up 32 tomatoes and mop up tomato juice and tomato seeds from the floor, the walls, the carpet, and two little children who have seeds coming out of their ears and their noses?

I was admittedly a tad bit upset and very nearly turned into the Devil Woman Tomato herself again. However, after a stern lecture I quickly got over it. My mother used to say that the punishment should fit the crime.

So, can you guess what my little ones had for lunch today?

Yep. Half sliced and half squished tomato sandwiches.

In our house, food is to eat - not to throw on the floor. However, if you intentionally throw it on the floor you still have to eat it. Depending on what it is, you might also just have to clean it up...can you tell by the "house rules" that we've gone over this at least a time or two?

Needless to say, I think I know two little boys who will probably not be playing ball in the house again, at least with tomatoes.

As I angrily pureed tomatoes at lunchtime, I had to smile. The happy 3-year-old seated at the kitchen table grinned up at me with tomato juice dripping all down his face and all over his clothes. In between mouthfuls he said, "Mommy me is not playing ball. Me is eating tomatoes!" Then, he wanted to know what I was doing and if he could help make "sketty sauce" too.

Sure is hard to stay mad even hours later when I'm still stepping on tiny tomato seeds as I walk through the kitchen. Now, it's getting late and those two balls of energy are sleeping soundly. The stove is on low and there are two large pots gently simmering that I stop what I'm doing to stir occasionally.

Soon, I'll call it a day...soon as the spaghetti sauce is done.Cemetery Road 101http://www.blogger.com/profile/14168541205162575967noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2491583881417428950.post-64097660165379363102008-08-25T21:32:00.013-04:002008-08-25T22:23:28.819-04:00Rotten Devil Tomato, Baby Stringbeans, & Teeny Tommy ToesWell, as all good things must come to an end so does the life of the "Devil Tomato." However, I do think she was looking most particularly devilish there near the end!

Yeah. With a rather glum look on his face yesterday he refused to pick any tomatoes. I asked him what was wrong. As he stomped off he shouted back to me, "None of these tomatoes have noses and faces!"

While there haven't been any other tomato devils, there have been a couple other interesting little babies.

This little stringbean baby, is actually two stringbeans which merged on the vine into one lovely and tiny little "fetus." This reminded me of either a Mother Nature or garden variety version of Camille Allen's Marzipan Babies. In case you're not familiar with Camille Allen, her miniature baby dolls are definitely not really made out of marzipan. They're delicately hand-crafted clay sculptures which she creates in limited editions. They are occasionally listed for sale on eBay.

While my doll collection is carefully stored until my small children realize that a Simon Halbig is not translation for, "See mommy, how big!" as something they reach out to touch accidentally breaks, I am in complete awe of the Marzipan Babies. I was equally in awe of this little stringbean baby as well...this is my doll collecting...on a "shoestring budget!"

Though I still think a great idea for a real Marzipan Baby collection would be vegetables, or "Fresh from the Farm." Instead of pink, blue, or white crochet diapers and hats, how 'bout green ones with miniature stems? Twins or triplets in a pea pod? An orange hat and diaper for a new little pumpkin? Yellow for sweet silver queen corn?

Ok. I'll stop. But not until I've shown you one more baby from the vegetable garden.

I call this one Teeny Tommy Toes...

What's so neat about "Teeny Tommy Toes" is that he's still so little that his skin is translucent and you can see his spinal cord!

If you never look at produce the same way again, I will definitely be elated!

Cemetery Road 101http://www.blogger.com/profile/14168541205162575967noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2491583881417428950.post-72748303448984264002008-07-31T16:15:00.005-04:002008-12-12T02:03:17.582-05:00Jesus in a Cheeto? The Devil in a Tomato? The web is buzzing about Kelly Ramey and her discovery of Jesus in a snack-sized bag of Cheetos. Quickly deeming the edible orange oddity “Cheesus,” Ramey’s family is enjoying the unique Cheeto which bears a resemblance to the shape of Jesus on the cross.

Like Kelly Ramey, I too recently found my own spiritual coincidence while making homemade spaghetti sauce. After picking buckets of tomatoes with two small rambunctious boys I was exhausted. The children were more than a little ornery and my day, to say the least, was difficult. The task of pureeing tomatoes and preparing dinner was inciting additional anger and frustration...

Until I discovered my very own, extremely delightful, angry "Devil Woman."

There was an old devil woman, who hated tomatoes too, but she had so many children, she didn't know what to do!

If you're interested in a few more funny looking tomatoes, check these out:

A Chinese man bought a Mickey Mouse tomato at his local market.

The Human Face tomato

More funny shaped tomatoes.

Scroll down the page to see the "Attack of the Salmonella Tomato" - obviously a doctored photo but it's funny.

Ok, so this one is an orange that looks like a cat but since tomatoes are fruit? veggies? My mom's always been wonderful, and I know that I certainly gave her plenty of reasons to want to ship me to the moon. In fact, the whole prospect of being shipped to the moon has this endearing sort of nostalgia attached to it now whenever someone mentions going to the moon. So, when I heard about one of NASA's current collaborative projects I just had to share!

Through June 27, 2008 everyone is cordially invited to ship your "Name" to the moon.
Names are being collected and will be placed on a microchip which will travel to the moon aboard the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft to mark NASA's historic trip back to the moon.

For additional information, visit the NASA press release available at the link below:
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/LRO/news/nametomoon.html

To add your name to the list, simply click on the link below:
http://http://lro.jhuapl.edu/NameToMoon/index.php

I'm so excited! I'm finally "officially" being shipped to the moon! I can't wait to tell my mom!
However...I think I'll wait just a few more days. I'm planning to ship her, along with the rest of our entire family, all to the moon! What a cool idea for a Mother's Day gift!! After all these years of empty threats, I can finally actually do something to get us all there! How neat is that?Cemetery Road 101http://www.blogger.com/profile/14168541205162575967noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2491583881417428950.post-19750911099297560362008-04-29T17:15:00.004-04:002008-04-29T17:37:13.205-04:0011.
it all starts with just 1.
such a lonely little 1.

1 stroke of genius.
1 single thought.
1 bit of luck.

1 moment in time.
1 chance to make a difference.
1 easy yes or 1 difficult no.

1 person.
1 place.
1 thing.

if it only takes 1,
why just 1?
why not more than 1?

which 1 am I?
which 1 are you?
are you the 1?

it all starts with 1.
it all ends with 1.
1.Cemetery Road 101http://www.blogger.com/profile/14168541205162575967noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2491583881417428950.post-40431842923312880032007-11-02T00:54:00.000-04:002008-12-12T02:03:17.809-05:00Highlights from the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro
Why's everybody always picking on me?

Am I clean yet?

Mommy, aren't you done already?

Come on mom, the other kids will think I'm odd!

Yeah, that's it. Due to the glitch, I haven't been able to share any of my latest meanderings as they are all photo related. It seems computers can be just as tempermental as children at times!

No, honestly I'm just ignoring you. Just kidding, though I have been busy working on my thesis and writing some articles for Associated Content. If you miss me, the link to AC is on the page here too.

If you haven't been in this neck of the woods in awhile then you missed the grand South Central fair which was here at Cemetery Road two weeks ago. I have an awesome photo I can't wait to share that has its own personal Cemetery Road flair, yet alas this silly Blogger photo glitch is holding things up. It is certainly a view of the fairgrounds that I've never seen in any traditional media form. So, yours truly feels obliged to share what's really behind the scenes, so to speak. That, and of course it amuses me so I do try my best to return the favor.

My latest adventure last weekend was taking the children on their first official zoo trip. It was a family affair as I think every monkey in the family jungle decided to come along too. Seriously though, it was a lot of fun. We saw giraffes (upclose), elephants, monkeys, zebras, and lots of other animals. I have some great photos to share from the zoo as well.

I'll post again as soon as Blogger fixes the glitch.Cemetery Road 101http://www.blogger.com/profile/14168541205162575967noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2491583881417428950.post-52140557297156253942007-10-11T13:32:00.001-04:002008-12-12T02:03:18.294-05:00The South Central Fair at Cemetery Road

The South Central Fair at Cemetery Road

Each October, the fair coming to town is such a monumental event. Literally.

I simply had to share my favorite view of the fair. Sadly, I don't think I'll ever see this particular view in any of the local newspapers, but it is nonetheless, my favorite view.

I can just imagine all the souls desiring undisturbed rest in peace, that are annually invaded by the week full of noise, music, and wonderful smells. I'm sure there's nothing worse than lying there craving some cotton candy, popcorn, and candy apples, while trying to decipher if that's a side of cow, pig, or chicken wafting alongside of the aromas.

If ever there was going to be a great time to wake the dead, I think the fair would be the ideal situation. However, even ghosts might be rudely awakened at today's five dollar price tag to ride one little silly ride. Instead of the "you must be this tall to ride" signs, they should read, "you must be a broke fool if you spent five dollars on this here thirty second expensive thrill."

Well, I don't really have much room to talk. I spent my five bucks on a virgin strawberry daiquiri and a funnel cake. Best five bucks I've spent in a long time, and now I have this nifty blue and hot pink plastic glass in my cupboard. When it's been a hard day, I refill the glass with whatever I have on hand...kool aid, water, tea, rum and coke, whatever. It really doesn't matter.

Then, I imagine I'm helping to wake the dead. The dead people walking that I wish would just wake up to what's going on around them. The dead brain cells in my head that obviously aren't getting enough oxygen flowing to them. The dead relationships that abound in the distant past. The dead silence that is really haunting. The dead funeral processions that come and go along the roadway. The dead leaves falling off the trees. The dead day. The dead night. The dead romances that sparked on the ferris wheel and smoldered by the time the colorful lightbulbs were turned off well after midnight.

I raise my glass to commemorate a time for every season and I know, the fair will be back next October. Alive with more funnel cakes and strawberry daiquiris.

Cemetery Road 101http://www.blogger.com/profile/14168541205162575967noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2491583881417428950.post-25052755821046502752007-10-06T14:37:00.001-04:002008-12-12T02:03:18.462-05:00The First Tiny Moon Flower The first tiny Moon Flower plant has officially arrived at Cemetery Road!!!

It is hard to believe that the full moon was only 10 days ago. A huge luminous moon and not a star or a cloud in sight.

A beautiful night, no matter how you look at it.

If there is such a thing as a perfect night for planting moon flowers, tonight would certainly have been it. I was in such awe of the moon, that I even forgot to sing and chant. I planted seeds.

Then just stared in silence.

There are few nights that take my breath away. Tonight was one of them.

The weatherman said it was going to be in the low sixties tonight, and there was a rustling breeze and just a hint of a chill in the air.

You can certainly tell Fall is well on her way.

I wish there were more nights like this, especially since the addition of the full moon compounds Mother Nature's peaceful lullaby at least by a hundredfold. I will try to make a point to visit the evenings outside a bit more. I had forgotten how invigorating it is to just quietly "be" in the dark silence.

The Man in the Moon, me, and the Moon Flower seeds.
Cemetery Road 101http://www.blogger.com/profile/14168541205162575967noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2491583881417428950.post-68747894620526743052007-09-26T01:56:00.000-04:002007-09-26T02:00:12.090-04:00It Only Takes a SparkIt only takes a spark to get a fire going.

I see you little red dots on Clustr Map. The game never got old.

Unfortunately, I could only ever run but so fast and I was lousy at hiding.

Only today, my computer runs slower than molasses, but nevertheless you cannot hide from me. You there. Hiding behind that no longer existent tree...

Tag! You're it!

Cemetery Road 101http://www.blogger.com/profile/14168541205162575967noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2491583881417428950.post-42460694463788745672007-09-06T21:58:00.000-04:002007-09-06T22:19:47.749-04:00Death of the Moon FlowersAfter much denial, it is with sheer brute force that I have finally come to the conclusion that the moon flowers are dead. Here along Cemetery Road, I am admittedly finding it slightly ironic that the blog's official flowers are simply dead. I haven't written in awhile because I was off diligently keeping watch, watering them, cursing the moon and my silly moon chants, and an assortment of other denial-like activities that urged, "just give it one more day."

I can only procrastinate the inevitable though, for so long. Four to six weeks has dragged on in upward of eight to nine weeks so I believe it is a fairly safe bet that the moon flowers are not going to sprout. Unless, they are invisible and have wings.

Ghost Moon Flowers?

Boo! Boo hoo!!

Well, I am nevertheless determined to try again.

A quick check on the calendar says that the next full moon will be on September 26th. In the meantime, I will be preparing a second attempt to wake the dead!

You're welcome once again to come out and make some noise with me if you'd like to!

This time, in the spirit of Jiffy popcorn (the self contained popping pan of popcorn that can even be used outdoors) I am going to try using a package of Jiffy pellet peat pots.

Now, say that really fast five times....Jiffy pellet peat pots, Jiffy pellet peat pots, Jiffy pellet peat pots, Jiffy pellet peat pots, Jiffy pellet peat pots...

Yeah, I know, I laugh hysterically by the fourth and fifth time as it sort of runs together and I want to say pees in a pot!!! Or toilet seat pots!! Then I get this fantastic image in my mind of moon flowers, except the plants themselves are now flowering bare gigantic naked butts! A sort of full moon, moon flower!

Well, perhaps the moon flowers will prefer to propagate themselves in their own individual little pees in a pots.

I hope so. Sure would be nice to see some actual moon flowers around here.Cemetery Road 101http://www.blogger.com/profile/14168541205162575967noreply@blogger.com0
